From skills to performance: Developing capability that works in context

Most organisations are not short of skills frameworks, courses or people who have completed them. The harder question is why so much learning disappears when it meets Monday morning. In this practical one-hour CIPD webinar, Dr Adrian Waite will explore the stubborn gap between knowing and performing—and why a capability that looks impressive on a slide can become strangely shy in the real world.

Drawing on social learning, communities of practice, systemic and team coaching, we will examine how capability is really developed: through connected workflows of meaningful work, shared practice communities, natural feedback, reflection and clear accountability over time. We will move beyond the individual learner to explore the context around them—purpose, workflow, relationships, leadership, culture and psychological safety, which either enables performance or quietly sits on it!

Participants will leave with a simple way to design capability backwards from the performance that matters: identify whats possible from where they are, the real direction and potential outcomes, understand what helps or obstructs it, and create opportunities for people to practise, learn together and adapt. This is not another grand tour of models or beautifully laminated competency frameworks. It is a more honest and practical approach to building capability that survives contact with the workplace, because lasting impact is not simply about knowing more, but navigating the real context and performing better.
