Katie Stickland, CIPD Knowledge Exchange Manager, reviews research that examines the best approach for using assessment centres to assess candidates for recruitment or development
Assessment centres are “a multifaceted evaluation approach used to guide selection and employee development decisions”. They require candidates to complete a series of activities which are observed and reviewed by an expert. This allows an organisation to compare candidates objectively or assess suitability for development and make a well-informed decision in that regard.
There is strong evidence demonstrating that overall scoring from assessment centres does predict the performance of an individual well, but there is also substantial evidence that competency-based assessments should not be used for candidate selection, training selection, and accreditation because they are unreliable.
