What is Academic Membership?

Academic Membership provides recognition for contributions to HR and L&D through higher education and research. Membership illustrates academic expertise through teaching, lecturing and research within the profession and highlight the impact it has in the world of work.

There are three levels of Academic membership:

  • Academic Associate (Academic Assoc CIPD): For experienced lecturers, tutors or researchers in an HR or L&D subject area.
  • Academic Member (Academic MCIPD): For experienced lecturers or senior researchers recognised in the UK or internationally as an expert in more than one relevant HR or L&D subject area.
  • Academic Fellow (Academic FCIPD): For senior academics or research leaders recognised in the UK or internationally as an expert in at least two areas of HR or L&D.

Designation

When you’re an Academic member you can use the relevant designation Academic Assoc CIPD, Academic MCIPD or Academic FCIPD after your name.

What do I need to apply for Academic Membership?

You can apply for Academic Membership if you are an individual working in the field of teaching or research in Human Resources Management or an HRM related area in the last five years. To be awarded an Academic Member level, you will be formally assessed via an online Microsoft Teams peer review discussion with one of our academic assessors who are experienced academics. In addition, we’ll also gain workplace feedback from people you work with, including your line manager, about your work and the impact this has had in your Institution and the HR profession.

Note: All membership levels require payment of a one-off joining fee of £40 or €46 
which is paid when you first become a member or when you rejoin membership after letting it lapse.
